Google doubles Gmail storage to 2GB
1 April 2005
Search giant Google has reportedly increased the size of its web mail inbox to 2GB.
The company has also hinted that it may continue to increase storage capacity for email users further in the coming weeks.
However, the web firm has no plans to increase Gmail's current 10MB attachment size limit, or to add extra features.
"Since we introduced Gmail, people have had a lot of place to store e-mail, but some of our heavier users have been approaching their limits and have been wondering what's going to happen," said Georges Harik, Gmail's product management director. "So, starting Friday, we're going to give people more and more space continuously and indefinitely on Gmail, as we're able to technologically."
Mr Harik added that, although the percentage of Gmail users approaching their in-box storage limit is not large, "they are a number that we care about".
Gmail currently remains in beta testing stage and, while free to use, it features text ads that are served up to users with each message they open, based on the text of the message.
Google also recently unveiled new rich text formats for Gmail, so the service now supports fonts, bullets, highlighting, indenting, and much more. The new features are in beta testing and Google is introducing them slowly over all its accounts.
A number of web mail providers have increased their free storage limits in recent months. Microsoft and Yahoo now both offer 250MB, and Yahoo plans to begin offering 1GB next month.
