LookSmart adds vertical search engines

Search company LookSmart has announced the launch of five vertical search engines designed to provide search outlets for niche audiences ranging from teens to parents.

The five new search engines include three homework-related sites, including Teenja.com for teens, Gradewinner.com for "tweens;" and 24hourscholar.com for college students.

In addition, the company has developed two search engines aimed at parents - the family-oriented Parentsurf.com and Gobelle.com for busy mothers.

"LookSmart believes that search on the web will become increasingly vertical and personal. Consumers turn to the web in search of essential content, be it related to a hobby, work or education," said Debby Richman, senior vice president of consumer products for LookSmart. "The new verticals were developed to build upon LookSmart's core demographics of researchers and families from the company's existing consumer products, FindArticles and Net Nanny."

LookSmart claims it selected the five topics based on the company's proprietary audience and research data based on user traffic patterns.

Vertical search, or search engines that are dedicated to particular areas of interest (like shopping or travel), are being hailed as the next big thing in search engine marketing, offering fewer, more relevant search results and allowing advertisers to target particular audience segments more effectively.
