Yahoo! forms relationship with Blackberry
14 March 2005
Yahoo! and Blackberry have reached a new agreement to provide Yahoo! Messenger services to BlackBerry users around the world.
The internet media giant announced that it had struck a deal with Research In Motion Ltd. to provide its instant messenger service to users of RIM's popular BlackBerry wireless email device. BlackBerry users will be able to access and connect with everyone on their friends list while they are on the go.
The deal is Yahoo!'s first with a handheld device manufacturer and, as part of the deal, the companies plan to preinstall Yahoo! Messenger on BlackBerry devices in the coming months. RIM and Yahoo said they also plan to launch Yahoo's email offering on the BlackBerry in the future.
Customers can also currently access Yahoo! Mobile Internet, including Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! News and Yahoo! Sports on BlackBerry devices.
The Blackberry was launched in 1999 and is known for its distinctive thumb-operated keyboard. With more than 2 million subscribers, the latest models also double as phones.
Meanwhile, Time Warner's AOL has also agreed to put services, such as its instant messenger and email, on RIM's BlackBerry device.
