Google unveils Desktop Search 1.0
9 March 2005
Google has launched its Google Desktop Search service as a final 1.0 version.
Google Desktop Search 1.0 is freely downloadable from the company's website. It is currently available for Windows XP and Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and above.
The software has been in the beta testing phase for five months and has now been enhanced to incorporate suggestions and bug fixes.
The desktop search supports indexing and searching of files in a wide range of formats and enables users to conduct a full text search of their email, files on their computer, web bookmarks, chats, webpage history and other features.
Google claims that they have added support for Chinese and Korean interfaces, Firefox and Netscape browsers, and Thunderbird and Netscape email. Google has also added a plug-ins feature so that developers can integrate their software into the Google Desktop catalogue.
"Google Desktop Search brings the power of Google search to information on the computer hard drive. It's like having a photographic memory of everything you've seen with your computer, right at your fingertips," said Jonathan Rosenberg, vice president of product management at Google.
MSN debuted a beta version of its desktop application in January, and Yahoo! launched its desktop search earlier this year.
