New Netscape beta uses Mozilla Firefox
8 March 2005
AOL has unveiled the first public test version of its Netscape 8.0 web browser, based on Mozilla Firefox 1.0.
The beta of Netscape's newest browser offers support for both the Gecko and Internet Explorer rendering engines and includes features designed to protect users against online scams and malicious code.
The new browser has a Site Controls feature that allows users to enable and disable features like ActiveX, JavaScript and cookies on a site-by-site basis and the includes self-updating whitelists and blacklists of safe and dangerous sites.
A preview version of the browser has been available to a select group of testers since late November. The beta release was originally scheduled for mid-February, but was delayed to fix some last-minute bugs.
AOL is challenging Microsoft Explorer's dominance with the new web browser. Netscape 8.0 uses Mozilla Firefox's rendering engine by default, but also supports the IE browser engine, using it in Windows. The new Netscape Browser 8.0 is a more commercial, heavy version of the open source Firefox browser.
