Google adds weather forecast service
7 March 2005
Search giant Google has announced on the company blog that it has added a shortcut that allows users to search for weather forecasts in various areas.
Users simply type in "weather" and their zip code or location to obtain a forecast. Google Weather results are also available on mobile phones via Google Mobile.
Google not only its own forecasts, but also the forecasts of other weather sites including Accuweather.com and WUnderground.com.
Both Yahoo! and Ask Jeeves have provided a shortcut/Smart Search for weather info since 2003. AltaVista first introduced a local weather shortcut in 2002. A local weather shortcut is also available on some Local Yahoo!s, such as the UK/Ireland and Australia/New Zealand services. SMS-based service, 4Info.net, and Yahoo! Mobile offer weather and other information for mobile web users.
Ask Jeeves properties in the UK and Japan also offer Smart Search options for weather info.
