New .eu domain poised for launch

3 March 2005

A new .eu domain name is expected to start a bidding war across Europe.

The date for the .eu launch has not yet been set, but businesses are already reportedly gearing up to grab prestigious new web addresses, with the most popular monikers expected to be the English language ones such as sex.eu, television.eu and media.eu.

A French firm specialising in registering domain names claims that as many as five hundred million potential European candidates for the new domain will converge in a "gold rush".

Thomas Sertillanges, communications director at Indom, said: "The opening of a new extension on the internet is a major event."

The .eu ending aims to maintain its European Union specificity, unlike the .com ending, originally created to designate commercial activities, according to the European Commission.

The European Commission has championed the .eu extension as a way of developing e-commerce in Europe and in October 2004, the commission approved Belgium-based registrar EURid to set up the rules of attribution for .eu.

The rules of registration for the .eu suffix are reportedly due to be published in the next few weeks and the .eu extension will be available for any business with its headquarters, administration or main office in the European Union, organisations established in the EU, or people living in any of the bloc's 25 member states.
