Yahoo! celebrates tenth anniversary
2 March 2005
Internet giant Yahoo! is celebrating its tenth year online.
The company, which was originally established by Stanford University students David Filo and Jerry Yang in a campus trailer as a way of keeping track of their web-based interests, now employs 7,600 workers.
The company has held onto its dot com culture of "work hard, play hard" and is one of a handful of survivors, including Google, MSN and AOL, to survive the dot-com crash.
The category lists created by Yahoo! soon became popular across the web and the site, originally dubbed "Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web", became a business concern.
In April 1995, venture capitalists Sequoia Capital, which also invested in Apple Computer and Cisco Systems, funded Yahoo! to the tune of $2 million (£1.04 million).
Mr Yang said: "In just one decade, the internet has changed the way consumers do just about everything - and it's been a remarkable and wonderful experience.
"Through it all, we wanted to build products that satisfied our users wants and needs, but it's even more than that - it's to help every one of us to discover, get more done, share and interact."
Yahoo!'s tenth anniversary will be officially recognised on March 2nd.
