Search engine announcement expected from EMC
1 March 2005
EMC is reportedly expected to announce that it is adding an online search engine option to its Centera content-addressed storage system.
The search service, part of an upgrade to the system, gives Centera arrays the ability to perform searches based on specific parameters and to create retention rules based on how the data was created.
Sean Lanagan, director of product management and emerging markets at EMC, told Computer World that the online search engine would add multiple capabilities.
EMC has agreed a deal with Oslo-based Fast Search & Transfer ASA for its Fast Enterprise Search platform, which EMC has dubbed Centera Seek. The new tool will reside out of the Centera's data path on an appliance and build a separate querying database using metadata stored with objects on the Centera device.
Mr Lanagan said that EMC also plans to groom the new Centera Seek tool's ability to report on retention periods, telling systems administrators how much data is coming up for deletion. "Now, instead of a dumb storage device behind [Centera, systems administrators] can query and restore all data from a certain IP address, for example," he added.
EMC said the Centera upgrade is priced at $4,000 for four nodes with the Seek module and $5,000 for four nodes with both Seek and Chargeback Reporter modules.
