Government unveils computer security alerts service
28 February 2005
The UK now has a new rapid alerting service for home computer users and small businesses.
The government has launched the new service, IT Safe, to inform users about damaging viruses, software vulnerabilities and weaknesses on devices such as mobile phones.
The free service will issue email or text alerts and the government expects to issue between six and 10 alerts a year about the most serious security threats.
IT Safe will inform people about how threats affect them and what they can do to protect themselves against attacks. Those who sign up will also occasionally receive messages about safe ways to use their computers and phones.
"There is a clear need for easy-to-understand and simple independent advice for non-technically minded people who use computers either at home or at work," said Home Office minister Hazel Blears.
"The purpose of this new government service is to ensure computer users are aware of the risks involved and how to deal with them easily and effectively without causing alarm."
The National Infrastructure Security Coordination Centre (NISCC) is running the service and stresses that those signing up will still need to use anti-virus software, firewalls, and software updates to stay secure.
