Net users concerns damage commerce potential
28 February 2005
Phishing scams and stories about ID theft are damaging the potential of using the net for online commerce, a new report claims.
A survey of more than 1,000 people by e-business security experts RSA found that 43 per cent were not willing to disclose personal information online, while 70 per cent insisted that firms were not doing enough to protect people.
An estimated 12 million Britons now use the net as a way of managing their financial affairs and many more shop online. On average, people have to remember four different passwords, though some resort to using the same one for all their online accounts.
Further research by RSA found that 80 per cent of computer users were fed up with passwords and would like a better way to login to work computer systems. Many said they would prefer a single online identity that can be validated once with a series of passwords and questions, or some biometric measurement like a fingerprint or iris scan, according to the BBC.
Banks and businesses are becoming increasingly aware of online security issues and vulnerabilities and are taking steps to tackle internet fraud.
