Gates announces plans for IE7

17 February 2005

Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates has announced that a new version of the company Internet Explorer browser is under development.

Mr Gates sold the RSA Security conference in San Francisco that IE7 would be more secure than ever and less vulnerable to bugs.

Test versions of the new program are due to be released by the summer and it is expected to include new protections against viruses, spyware and phishing scams.

Microsoft has been forced to issue a series of regular updates to patch loopholes in its IE6 program and has become increasingly concerned about security and increased competition from rival browsers, such as the open source Firefox service.

The software giant released a security bulletin that patched eight critical security holes in its software earlier this month, some of which were found in the IE browser. The company has also made a series of acquisitions of small firms that specialise in computer security.

Microsoft released an anti-spyware program last month and an own-brand anti-virus program is due to follow by the end of 2005. A new version of IE was widely expected to debut with the next version of Windows, codenamed Longhorn, which is due to appear in 2006.

The Firefox browser since it was released in November 2005 and the browser's market share is now approaching five per cent of all users.
