Britons frustrated with ISPs

17 February 2005

Many Britons are unhappy with their internet service, a new survey claims.

According to research conducted by PC Pro magazine, UK internet users are becoming increasingly frustrated with slow speeds, high prices and the level of customer service they receive.

The survey found that 17 per cent of readers said they had switched supplier, while a further 16 per cent said they were considering changing in the near future.

The magazine found that almost three times as many people are trying to leave BT, the UK's largest internet supplier, that are trying to join.
In total a third of the 2,000 broadband users interviewed were fed up with their current providers. Some BT and Tiscali customers reported being offered price drops when they phoned up to cancel subscriptions, while others said they were tied into 12-month contracts.

Tim Danton, editor of PC Pro Magazine, said: "We expect these figures to leap in 2005. Every month the prices drop, and more and more people are trying to switch."

Broadband has become hugely competitive and providers are desperate to hold on to customers.

Mr Danton said: "We discovered a huge variety of problems, but one of the biggest issues is the current supplier withholding the information that people need to give to their new supplier. This breaks the code of practice, but because that code is voluntary there's nothing we or Ofcom can do to help."
