Google offers aid to Wikipedia
14 February 2005
Free, open source encyclopaedia Wikipedia has received an offer from search giant Google to provide it with much-needed storage and hosting services.
The deal is reportedly still in very early stages, but with MSN Encarta integrated into Microsoft search results, hooking up with Wikipedia could be a smart move by Google.
Wikipedia has stressed that Google has not asked for any favours in return for its offer of help. Google searches already access Wikipedia and other Wikimedia resources through the services that host the organisation's content.
Google spokesperson Nate Tyler told TechNewsWorld: "While we don't have anything specific to announce today, Google and the Wikimedia Foundation are collaboratively evaluating creative ways to support Wikipedia.org and its community."
Google has also listed Mozilla Firefox's default homepage on its server recently and hired two of the open source browser's major developers.
