Yahoo! releases beta toolbar for Firefox
10 February 2005
Internet firm Yahoo! has launched a beta release of the Yahoo! Toolbar for the Mozilla Firefox web browser.
The toolbar is compatible with Windows, some versions of MacOS X, and Linux, and reportedly contains all of the features of Yahoo! Toolbar for Windows, except the anti-spyware option, which is coming soon. It also offers a Yahoo! Mail alert option and provides a one-click solution to add RSS feeds to My Yahoo! pages.
The Yahoo! Toolbar Beta will enable Firefox users to fully customise their internet experience Yahoo! claims.
"The Yahoo! Toolbar provides Internet users with a faster, safer and personalized Web experience," said Eckart Walther, director of product development at Yahoo! Search. "Yahoo! is now making this functionality available to Firefox users, enabling them to improve their Internet browsing experience using Yahoo!'s industry-leading toolbar."
"We're excited about the release of the Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox," added Mitchell Baker, president of the Mozilla Foundation. "Firefox has been downloaded more than 23 million times since its launch in November and the Yahoo! Toolbar release demonstrates the popularity of the browser and the success of the Mozilla platform. We're very pleased that Yahoo! is supporting browser choice and innovation with this new product."
Toolbars enable users to go directly to particular services, such as email or web search, simply by clicking on an icon.
Amazon.com's A9 search unit also offers a toolbar for open source browser Firefox and Google recently hired the lead engineer of Firefox, fuelling speculation that the search giant plans to create its own browser to take on Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
