AOL launches browser beta expansion
9 February 2005
America Online has unveiled a larger public beta version of its AOL-branded web browser, based on Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
The AOL Browser beta started in October with a select group of AOL subscribers and is now open to AOL members and the 36 million active users of AOL Instant Messenger.
The new AOL Browser beta version adds features such as tabbed browsing, thumbnail previews of previous pages, pop-up blocking and security options to the IE rendering engine. AOL Search, recently overhauled, receives top billing in the browser, appearing as one of three options in a slide-out panel on the browser's left side and AOL also is using the browser to deliver a beta testing version of its desktop search service.
A company spokeswoman Jaymelina Esmele said: "[AOL Browser] is part of our initiative to reach an audience on the web beyond AOL members, so this browser will give them an alternative browsing experience."
AOL has not yet announced when the full version of the revamped AOL Browser will be available.
AOL Browser is separate both from AOL's client for subscribers and its Netscape browser. Another update of the Netscape browser, which is based upon the Gecko rendering engine from the Mozilla Foundation, is expected to be launched in beta later this month.
