Microsoft boosts security with Sybari
9 February 2005
Software company Microsoft has announced that has agreed a new deal to purchase
anti-virus maker Sybari Software.
Microsoft plans to become more competitive in the anti-virus and internet security market, challenging firms such as Symantec and McAfee.
"Through this acquisition (Sybari), we're excited to be able to provide customers with a server-level antivirus solution that delivers advanced file- and content-filtering capabilities, and the use of multiple scan engines," Microsoft said in a statement.
Sybari, of East Northport, New York, makes antivirus, antispam and e-mail content filtering products for large firms. The company's Antigen anti-virus product is a server-based tool that uses multiple anti-virus engines to scan email messages for viruses.
Earlier this year, Microsoft began offering free programs to remove viruses and spyware and the company is reportedly planning to charge for more sophisticated antivirus tools in the future
Microsoft acquired Romanian anti-virus firm GeCAD Software in 2003 and bought anti-spyware company Giant Company Software in December 2004.
The Sybari acquisition comes a week before chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates is scheduled to make a keynote speech at the RSA Security Conference in San Francisco, where he is expected to further outline Microsoft's security strategy.
