Ask Jeeves purchases Bloglines
8 February 2005
Online search engine Ask Jeeves has reportedly bought web log index Bloglines.
Bloglines is a leading blog index and internet news site and Ask Jeeves plans to use its new acquisition to take on the might of more popular rivals, such as Google and Yahoo!
News of the deal initially broke via the blogging community. The sale was completed last week, but Ask Jeeves delayed making a formal announcement and officials have stated that the sale price will not be disclosed.
Ask Jeeves plans to maintain Bloglines as an independent brand, and retain the start-up's founder, Mark Fletcher. Bloglines' technology will also be combined with Ask Jeeves' existing network of websites, which includes Ask.com, iWon.com, Excite.com and Myway.com.
Bloglines, formed in 2003, has a searchable index of nearly 285 million articles posted on blogs and also aggregates content delivered via RSS feeds. Web logs, or blogs, are online journals that have developed into an influential source of news and debate on the internet.
