Yahoo! unveils new Y!Q beta search tool
7 February 2005
Yahoo! has started testing a version of a new internet search tool called Y!Q.
The new service allows users to search without leaving the web page they are reading and enables users to integrate search results directly into their own sites through Y!Q supplied embedded search tags.
Y!Q features a purple icon with a magnifying glass and the words "Search Related Info" that displays relevant results in a pop-up box within the same page. The results produced are based on the page being read.
"The thinking is that if you can read an article, you can be inspired to search," said Ken Norton, senior director of product management at Yahoo search. "We're bringing search to the moment of inspiration... We'll save them time and energy, and the most relevant search."
The beta search also features a downloadable Y!Q DemoBar, a Yahoo! branded toolbar.
Y!Q toolbar is now available as a downloadable toolbar and in test version on Yahoo! news. Users can also put the search feature on their pages, like a blog.
Yahoo! has not yet revealed whether it has any plans to insert advertising in the Y!Q searches.
"Y!Q is in beta and we're focused on gathering user feedback to see what people think of the product. We're not currently serving ads and if we decide to monetise this search product, we will consider user experience while evaluating the most optimal revenue models," Aaron Ferstman, public relations manager for Search, Yahoo!, commented.
