Firefox 1.1 launch delayed
4 February 2005
The release of the new Firefox 1.1 open source browser has reportedly been put back to June.
Developers have insisted that the delay is 'normal' and is not connected to the recent move of lead engineer Ben Goodger to Google.
Mr Goodger announced in his blog that the anticipated March release of version 1.1 will be delayed until the summer, but stressed that his decision to join Google was not the cause.
"In a move that I would hope should surprise exactly nobody, we're pushing back 1.1 by a little bit because of the realities of the work remaining to be done," he wrote.
The developer added: "The slippage from March is not due to my move to Google, it is due to us needing to ensure the 1.1 release is of identical quality and scope as the 1.0 release - that means a period of testing, the localization system needs to be brought back online, etc. These things are done by more people than just myself, so quit with the wacky speculation."
A 1.1 developer preview will be appearing in March, but the full 1.1 'Deer Park' release is now scheduled for June 2005. The updated roadmap for the open source browser shows a beta release scheduled for early April, with the final version out by June. The developers expect to unveil Firefox 2.0 this year.
Firefox passed the milestone of 10 million downloads in December 2004, and now commands a market share of around five per cent.
However, the developers are confident that the browser would touch version 2.0 in the current year itself. The roadmap for Firefox browser can be accessed from Mozilla's website.
