Microsoft officially enters search market

1 February 2005

Microsoft has debuted the finished version of its own-brand search engine

The software giant unveiled the MSN search site on Tuesday, officially launching the final version of the site, which has been in the beta testing stage since November 2003.

MSN Search is being launched in 25 markets and in 10 languages simultaneously. The revamped engine indexes more pages than before, can give direct answers to factual questions, and features tools to help people create detailed queries.

MSN is now taking on the might of established search giants such as Google and Yahoo!, who dominate the search market, and newer entrants, such as Amazon and Blinkx, which are growing in popularity.

Microsoft claims its newest product will offer a "more personalized search experience" and states that it will update its document index every two days, more often that its rivals.

MSN Search is being launched under the Microsoft Network banner and has been developed using a new search algorithm, built from the ground up, based on a database of around five billion entries.
