Google ousted by Apple as top global brand
31 January 2005
Apple has replaced Google as the top worldwide brand, a new survey reveals.
According to Brandchannel's fourth annual Readers' Choice Awards for brand of the year, Google has been shunted into second place by Apple Computers.
"From the public's perspective, Google's unique approach to life's little issues was on display as it went public in 2004, seeking to do so largely on its own terms," Brandchannel.com said, announcing the results.
"The same strong arm can be felt in the pretzel-twisting exercise webmasters are submitted to when trying to meet the company's keyword ranking guidelines. However, as long as the brand is on top, it gets to call the rules."
Apple has witnessed the phenomenal success of its iPod digital music player and iTunes music downloads website in 2004 and the company took the Reader's Choice, despite a public offering from Google last year. The search giant topped the chart the previous two years.
The rankings for the top brands of 2004 were:
1. Apple
2. Google
3. Ikea
4. Starbucks
5. Al Jazeera
Branding professionals from 75 countries cast 8,098 votes in the 2004 Readers' Choice survey, conducted from November to December 2004.
