New website for homebuyers
31 January 2005
The UK Land Registry has officially launched a new website designed to help people purchasing a house.
The service will help buyers better gauge prices by allowing them to compare how much neighbours have paid for their homes
The Land Registry's new online service offers users the chance to check out who owns a particular property and how much was paid for it and view a property's boundaries and any restrictions put on its use for a £2 fee.
The Land Registry claims the new service will make the home buying process more transparent, as people previously had to submit a written request or drop into one of the organisation's offices in order to access information.
Liz Aelberry, a Land Registry spokeswoman, told BBC News: "The service could speed up the sales and even help stop some buyers paying over the odds."
The online service has been trialled since 2003 and attracted an average 1,500 searches a day, earning more than £1 million in fees.
