iTunes sales booming
27 January 2005
Software company Apple Computers has announced that it has sold more than 250 million songs via its popular iTunes music service.
The company is now selling an estimated one million songs a day via the online store, which is available in 15 countries.
According to research firm NPD Group, music sold from iTunes accounted for up to 70 per cent of legal music sold between December 2003 and July 2004.
iTunes sales are though to have been boosted by the phenomenal success of Apple's iPod portable music player. The site features more than a million songs available on a pay-per-download basis and remains the leader in online music, despite new web stores from companies such as Microsoft and Yahoo!
"When we launched the iTunes Music Store we were hoping to sell a million songs in the first six months - now we're selling over a million songs every day, and we've sold over a quarter billion songs in total," said Steve Jobs, chief executive for Apple.
"iTunes is leading the way into the digital music era and together with iPod is changing the way millions of music lovers find and enjoy their music," he added.
