Google plans fibre optic network
19 January 2005
Reports are circulating that search giant Google is planning to construct its own global fibre optic network.
According to web rumours, Google is on the hunt for 'dark fibre', fibre optic cable that has already been laid, but is not yet in use. Thousands of miles of dark fibre is reportedly available in the United States and it is possible that Google could make the leap into the telecommunications market.
The internet firm recently posted a job listing on its website seeking experts in the field.
The posting read: "Google is looking for Strategic Negotiator candidates with experience in...(i)dentification, selection, and negotiation of dark fiber contracts both in metropolitan areas and over long distances as part of development of a global backbone network."
Thousands of miles of dark fibre is available in the United States, but there have been few takers because of the high costs of making it operational.
Google has refused to comment on the job posting. Any development of a global or national fibre network would take years and cost billions of dollars to implement.
