Yahoo! and Verizon team up for broadband offering

18 January 2005

Yahoo! has joined forces with US phone company Verizon to deliver a co-branded broadband offering to subscribers to Verizon Online's DSL and new fiber-based FiOS services.

Under the multi-year agreement, subscribers to Verizon Communications high-speed internet services will be able to access customised and premium content from Yahoo! that combines the companies' offerings into a single brand.

The new service will be offered from this summer, at no additional charge, to Verizon consumer broadband subscribers and the two companies are reportedly planning an aggressive marketing campaign. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

"Our unique ability to now offer customers their choice of portal options from first-class partners like Yahoo! gives Verizon a real competitive edge over offerings from other broadband companies," said Bob Ingalls, president of Verizon's Retail Markets organization.

"Broadband users looking for more value and a superior online experience will come to Verizon because they know they can count on us to deliver innovative services like the new Verizon Yahoo! product."

Yahoo! also has an agreement, in place since 2002, with SBC Communications and further deals with British Telecom and Rogers Communications, a Canadian cable company. New York-based Verizon also has a deal with Microsoft's MSN to provide content to its customers, but Yahoo! will become the preferred partner from this summer.

Verizon-Yahoo! broadband will offer premium services such as greater email storage, video and radio as well as access to a co-branded home page. Subscribers will use the same username and password to log in to all services at no extra cost and the combined service will be available in Verizon's territory of 29 states and the District of Columbia.
