Spam turns users off email
24 October 2003
A study of 1,380 individuals has found that growing spam levels are deterring web users from using email.
A quarter of respondents in a survey carried out by US think tank Pew Internet stated that they were using less email as a direct result of spam.
'People just love email, and it really bothers them that spam is ruining such a good thing,' Deborah Fallows of Pew Internet told the BBC.
'People resent spam's intrusions. They are angered by its deceptions and they are offended by much of the truly disgusting content,' she added.
The study found pornographic spam content to be particularly offensive to users, especially among women and parents.
Both the UK and US governments have introduced anti-spam legislation in a bid to tackle the growing problem, and leading companies including Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL have boosted efforts to restrict the proliferation of unsolicited emails.
It was recently reported that spam messages account for over half of all emails sent.
