US senate ratifies anti-spam bill
23 October 2003
Members of the US senate have passed a bill aimed at preventing the spread of spam emails by 97 votes to nil.
The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act will allow spammers to be fined as much as $3 million (£1.7 million) for sending certain types of spam, and other fines of up to $100 (£59) per message.
Before the bill needs further endorsement from the House of Representatives before it becomes a law that can be put into practical effect.
The proposed legislation will create a national database of users who expressly wish not to receive unsolicited emails.
The bill comes in the wake of recent announcements by the UK government of regulations prohibiting the sending of unsolicited emails without prior consent from recipients.
Though welcomed by anti-spam campaigners, many have argued that more needs to be done internationally; spam being a global Internet problem.
