Microsoft upgrades increase email controls
21 October 2003
Software giant Microsoft is set to launch a new version of its Outlook email programme including features that will prevent the unrestricted forwarding of email messages.
The programme will use a new Information Rights Management system to protect sensitive information and give the original sender control over the proliferation of emails.
'Forwarding is obviously the key issue,' stated Mike Pryke-Smith, marketing manager at Microsoft.
'This puts control into the hands of the person sending the e-mail, as opposed to allowing the proliferation of messages,' he explained to the BBC.
The new programme also includes a number of anti-spam measures, including filters and a blacklisting facility.
Microsoft estimates that some 300 million copies of Outlook are in use globally. The new version goes on sale in the UK this week, part of the new Office 2003 package.
