Lycos to provide online films in Movielink deal
20 October 2003
Online film provider Movielink is teaming up with Lycos to provide a joint film downloading service.
lycos.movielink.com will allow Lycos users access to Movielink's database of movies and significantly widen Movielink's customer base.
Movielink is owned by five of Hollywood's major movie studios: Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
The studios see Movielink as a way to offer a service that would compete with free, movie swap sites that offer illegally copied films in digital computer files.
Lycos has recently announced plans to discontinue its free email service as of this month, in order to concentrate efforts and resources on other services.
Movielink launched its service last year, offering downloadable films at a fee. It recently announced an upgrade to its site and software and has launched a new national promotional campaign this year.
