Child surfers lead in web knowledge
16 October 2003
New research shows that children are more often than not the resident web experts in the average British home.
A study undertaken by researchers at the London School of Economics queried focus groups of nine to 19-year-olds about how they used the internet, and their opinions on its safety and value.
It found that in households with one or more computer-literate adults, children were often the Internet experts, although they mainly used the music and games and to communicate with friends.
'Both girls and boys gain significant, perhaps even unprecedented, social status through the value that adults place on this expertise,' states the report.
'Although parents may be 'catching up', young people's willingness to experiment may make this a lasting reversal of the generation gap,' it was added, according to the Guardian.
The report also found that many youngsters were not overly concerned with online safety, objected to enforced supervision and could overcome many restrictions placed on their browsing.
