UK lobbies for global spam clampdown
15 October 2003
Government representatives have been lobbying in the US for the introduction of international spam regulation laws.
Spam, which reportedly accounts for half of all emails sent in the UK is a growing problem for businesses and threatens the operations of legitimate marketers.
A ban on unsolicited emailing in the UK has recently been announced, whereby marketers must ensure permission from recipients before sending messages.
However, because so much spam originates from the US, the co-operation of Congress is vital for British efforts to succeed.
Andrew Pinder, the government's e-envoy, held talks in Washington to convince the US to back a ban on spam emails.
'This is a worldwide problem and most of the stuff goes across borders,' Mr Pinder said. 'We have to be able to cross borders to deal with it.'
