Web-surfing more popular than channel-hopping

13 October 2003

New research reveals that the average Briton spends more time browsing the Internet than watching television.

According to a survey carried out by BT Yahoo Broadband, UK consumers spend 3.5 hours surfing the web compared to 2.8 watching television.

Nearly half of those surveyed stated that the Internet is a better source of news and entertainment than programmes on television.

A vast majority of the 500 homes surveyed confirmed that information availability was the most desirable feature of the Internet, with online shopping and chat also proving popular.

Duncan Ingram, managing director at BT Openworld, said: 'The results of this survey demonstrates to what extent the internet has developed in a relatively short space of time.

'Given the breadth of information the net holds, it's little surprise that users are flocking to the PC, rather than the TV, as their prime source of information,' he told Web User.
