Google glitch blocks sites
10 October 2003
A programming error in Google's search engine has inadvertently blocked thousands of sites from users.
The error, dubbed a 'Google-NACK' (Negative ACKnowledgement), returns few or no sites to searches with tens of thousands of matches.
One expert has suggested that Google's own spam filter, designed to exclude particular links, is not sophisticated enough to avoid blocking innocent sites.
'Technical solutions may have unintended consequences,' researcher Seth Finkelstein explained to it-analysis.
'When Google searches for combinations of terms, pages with the terms close to each other are ranked highly. Such pages are also unfortunately often search spam pages, using a mishmash of keywords,' he added.
