Yahoo tops revenue expectations

9 October 2003

Yahoo has exceeded earnings and revenue expectations for its third quarter, posting net revenue of over $356 million (£214 million).

This represents a net income of over $65 million (£39 million), more than double that of the same period last year.

Figure show that Yahoos user base has grown to some 245 million individuals, almost 45 million more than were using the portal in 2002.

Most of these users are registered with the company; the first time that registered users have made up more than half the total user base.

Bosses largely attribute strong financial performances to growth in online advertising.

'With online advertising on the move, Yahoo is one of the best-positioned global companies to take advantage of the upswing,' commented Yahoo chairman and chief executive officer Terry Semel to Computer Weekly.

Yahoo has recently launched a search service that allows users to compare product prices and buy from different retailers, in a bid to exploit the growing popularity of online shopping.
