AOL boosts search technology
8 October 2003
AOL has extended its alliance with Google with the development of its branded search services.
Under the new system AOL users were offered search results from Google, adding significantly to the number of results generated by AOL's search engine.
Sponsored links will be added to AOL search results, introducing a potential 150,000 advertisers to AOL subscribers. Navigation format and display have also been revamped in a bid to make the service more user-friendly.
The announcements come at a time when online searching is becoming an increasing point of focus for Internet companies, ISPs and software firms.
Yahoo has recently secured deals with Inktomi and Overture that will enable it to establish complete in-house search operations, and Microsoft yesterday ended a contract with LookSmart in order to develop its own search service.
The AOL/Google deal is likely to be a multi-year agreement, their existing contract having been signed only last year.
'Having the most popular search company power our search, so popular that 'googling' has entered the lexicon, increases member loyalty,' stated AOL spokesperson David Theis.
