WAP gets upwardly mobile
6 October 2003
New figures reveal that UK mobile owners are downloading more web pages than ever before onto their phones.
An estimated average of over 28 million pages are viewed each day through WAP services, a figure that is expected to increase as new technology grows in popularity.
Three times as many pages are being downloaded than last year; an increase has been attributed to the increased availability of more advanced phones with user-friendly colour screens and reliable net connections.
Kate Marriott of the Mobile Date Association (MDA) highlights polyphonic ringtones as a key factor in the popularity of WAP services, £70 million worth of which are expected to be sold by the end of the year.
'I think with the new handsets and their capabilities, and with the tones being such good quality, people are downloading them rather than buying singles,' she told the BBC.
Ms Marriott also identified news, celebrity gossip and sport information as increasingly popular services exploited by WAP technology.
'There are so many compelling WAP applications out there now and more sites available,' she said.
