File sharers establish code of conduct
1 October 2003
Six file-sharing networks, under the banner P2P United, have unveiled a new code of conduct designed to encourage responsible behaviour among users.
The peer-to-peer services have launched a joint bid to improve their image following accusations of piracy and pornography.
The group, consisting of LimeWire, Grokster, Blubster, BearShare, Morpheus and eDonkey 2000, agreed to help police investigating the trading of child porn on their networks and vowed not to secretly install spyware on user's computers.
They also agreed to warn users about copyright law and the potential criminal or civil penalties of piracy. However, they stopped short of agreeing to take action against users who share copyrighted material.
The industry blames file sharing and online piracy for falling CD sales. Millions of songs are traded over the Internet every day and one industry group is suing hundreds in a bid to clampdown on the practice.
P2P United claims that the recording industry needs to look at alternative ways of licensing songs online for users to share.
