Pinder: widespread high-speed internet access is essential
29 September 2003
The government's envoy for Internet technology has said that provision of high speed internet access to rural communities is crucial to their economic wellbeing.
Andrew Pinder cautioned that business is likely to neglect rural areas if they do not have access to high-speed Internet, according to ePolitix.com.
'Given that most new employment is IT based, we need to have IT connectivity, particularly broadband, for the industry to go to a rural place,' he asserted.
'Rural broadband is an issue, and it's going to be an increasing issue because rural areas are going through a rough time.'
National broadband access is currently at over 80 per cent, but many rural communities are yet to benefit from the technology due to small populations and limited interest.
Schemes for the promotion of rural broadband are underway, essential for local schools homes and business to keep pace with equivalents in larger towns and cities. Mr Pinder stressed the importance of establishing rural connectivity:
'If we don't, we're going to end up with an empty countryside and that's really bad for everybody,' he concluded.
