Ask Jeeves plans wireless search service

Ask Jeeves has revealed that it is currently developing a wireless search service for mobile phones.

Company executives said the new wireless search services will be launched later this year. Daniel Read, Ask Jeeves' vice president of product management, said: "In search today you have to offer several access points to provide a good search service for consumers, so we believe we have to be there in wireless search, and we'll be coming out with a mobile product this year."

The search firm claims the new service will enable users to search for a local services through the internet and allow them to click on a link and initiate a phone call. The new service will compensate Ask Jeeves for the call rather than the click.

In developing its wireless search services, Ask Jeeves will focus on providing very specific information to queries and not try to replicate the conventional web searching experience, according to Mr Read.

Companies such as Google and Yahoo! already offer users the ability to use the search engine via mobile devices.

"A lot of search players have put traditional Web search on to wireless devices, but most of the Web pages you want to go to aren't rendered properly on a wireless device screen. So we're looking at rolling out specific search services for the wireless device," he explained.

Ask Jeeves is also developing a search service focused on digital music to help users find and retrieve music files on different platforms, such as the web and mobile devices.
