I have learned that there are six vital things in business. Finding friends, finding out how you can help them, helping them, keep thinking about them, finding others like them and introducing them to each other.
You may have been expecting me to talk about SEO, PPC, Social Media and all those things. They all come into play when you think about how you can best help your friends. It’s not that people become friends, it is that to become clients, you have to first become friends.
My first technology venture was the founding of Saga Systems in 1981. Based in London, I started off as an engineer in Missile Guidance – you could refer to me as the original, bonafide Rocket Scientist. Although excellent at killing enemies, I quickly realised this was not how to make friends. While there I designed a keyboard to work on the ZX Spectrum home computer and went on to make many many friends and I earned my first million at a tender young age.
Just a couple of years later I could not sell any more keyboards, the computer I had designed it for got updated. I managed to lose my house, smash up my car. Then the final and complete wipe out – divorce! Now penniless my former wife refused access to my new born son too.
My life had been reset.
I had lost everything in life that I had ever cherished. I struggled to make ends meet with less than a £1000 pounds to my name, no job, no business, everything lost and maintenance (alimony) to pay I was in trouble. I had no alternative but to take shelter at my parents house and there I had to suffer my mother hound me out of bed every day to ‘go to work’, ‘find work’, do ‘something’. Of course, I thank her now, but at the time, it was unbearable.
From here the only way was up! I WAS getting things done. I did got a job at KFC in the evenings and I sold and made sandwiches at a nearby industrial park in the mornings. I started back on my feet. I tried to get a real job in the afternoons. However, I was soon providing new computer networks to the business owners of those self same industrial parks. You learn a lot about yourself during times of difficulty.
I was still basically broke, but I had something, I received an invitation to attend an event in Los Angeles, it was a MAD thing to do. I cashed everything and paid for the flight. I enjoyed the Californian sunshine and the company. I heard inspiring stories and set about to transform my life a little more drastically than I had imagined.
That was 1996. On the plane home I determined to set up and register Weboptimiser.com. My fortune quickly recovered, a close shave and near brush with disaster averted. People came to me, and again I was making lots of friends and helping others do the same. A story that continues to this day.
Weboptimiser pioneered the SEO Industry. During that time I served as Chairman of the Search Task Force for the Internet Advertising Bureau for a few years. I set best-practice standards that were adopted by all good providers in the Search Engine Marketing industry. I have since chaired at events and have had occasion to deliver key note presentations at industry events around the world – the last one in Spain this year for Brown-Forman.
In 2010 I was a guest on The Brian Tracy Show, which was aired in the US, I was the Online Marketing Expert. The program featured on NBC and was syndicated out to many other channels. I have also appeared on Sky News and LBC radio.
The appearance on the The Brian Tracy Show as a result of co-authoring “The Relationship Age”: Where “The world’s leading experts teach you PROVEN strategies for creating profitable relationships in the world of Social Media” with Mari Smith, who is known as the pied piper of Social Media and others.
“The Relationship Age” quickly became an Amazon Best Seller. In December 2010 I was awarded a Best-Sellers Quill Award by the National Academy of Best-Selling Authors in New York for the book’s success.
More recently, I co-authored “The New Masters of Online Marketing: Leading experts from around the world reveal proven secrets to grow your business through Online Marketing Strategies”. That too became an Amazon best seller.
In 2012 following the best-selling launch of ‘Marketing Miracles’ with Dan Kennedy I was awarded another Quill Award by the National Academy of Best-Selling Authors this time presented to me in Hollywood.
In the UK in later part of 2012 I wrote for Hit-Me, a book published by Harriman House and await to see how that fares.

Generating sales results is, in a nutshell is what I have pioneered for the last 16 years, since the beginning of online. Nowadays, although in many senses a digital first, I have turned analogue. I am most often found with one foot in a plane forever seeking out the best in the world. What I do is probably best summed up as ‘direct marketing’. Nowadays, it really is not the tactics that count so much as the strategy that you employ to ensure the tactics deliver the goods.
Digital first. As a former engineer and the original digital ‘rocket scientist’ I used to program early microprocessors by hand and served an apprenticeship with a missile guidance company. My second and last ‘job’ before setting up Weboptimiser was with Rank Xerox where I stayed for a few years and had a ball of a time. I realised there that I enjoyed working with real live people – and have been determined to dedicate myself to the living and breathing ever since.
Regularly travelling, you will find that given enough notice I can provide an entertaining presentation either one to one or from the stage. I help build client opportunities in order to bring more people into your fold and unusually I really do see the business from your perspective first and last. I have found that the simple truth is to first look after you, from there, happiness reigns supreme.
